Nepal The Great Himalaya Trail 2012: Dolpo and Kanchenjunga

DOLPO Itinerary | KANCHENJUNGA Itinerary | Remote Area Trekking
The Great Himalaya Trail is a brand new innovation for trekking devotees. If you’ve enjoyed trekking the Kokoda Track, Kilimanjaro or Everest Base Camp, this is the next adventure for you. Back Track Adventures are high altitude, remote area trekking specialists. We see the Great Himalayan Trail as a logical addition to our trekking portfolio.
There is no single, Great Himalayan Trail. Rather, there is a network of intertwining trails that stretch from one end of Nepal to the other. The passage through any one particular section of trail is dependent on season. In the depths of winter, some higher altitude sections are blocked because of high snowfall. During the months of the summer monsoonal rains, passage along some sections is a daunting prospect due to high water levels and mud washouts of trails and bridges.
Trails once only used for migration, trade and nomadic wanderings are now also used by trekkers. Numerous expeditions have crossed Nepal from east to west, but due to restricted areas, most had to divert south away from the Nepal/Tibet border. The last of the restricted sections are now open. The entire traverse of the Great Himalaya Trail takes about 160 days but Back Track has broken it down to shorter sections to enable it to be more accessible.
Maximum size of each group is 14 and all meals on the trek are included. Porterage of your gear is also included in the cost so you need only carry a light day pack.
Back Track has 25 years of experience trekking the remote, high altitude trails of Nepal. We are proud to introduce new treks over the Great Himalaya Trail. To kick things off, we have chosen treks in two regions, Dolpo and Kanchenjunga – selected for their remoteness, sensational alpine scenery and the legendary hospitality of the local inhabitants. In future seasons we will be adding more treks along the Great Himalayan Trails.
Dolpo
Dolpo, in western Nepal, is a remote, magical land of high passes, deep river valleys, alpine forests, barren landscapes and quaint, medieval style villages. The inhabitants of Dolpo follow Tibetan Buddhism but some practice the older Bon-Po religion. Their hospitality to outsiders is legendary in keeping with their role as custodians of the many trade routes through their land.
With the exception of its ancient trade and cultural links to Tibet, Dolpo was largely cut off from the outside world. Few trekkers have crossed over the trails that Back Track will explore. Prepare yourself for a land of mystery and great beauty.
Kanchenjunga
Kanchenjunga (8595m), in the remote east of Nepal is the third highest mountain on earth. The small groups that Back Track take into this area are rewarded with outstanding mountain views, dense forests, quiet trails and friendly, hospitable people. We explore rarely trekked regions; walk alongside massive glaciers and cross ridges and high passes deep in the mountains. A pioneering spirit and sound fitness are required to enjoy this challenging trek.
Supporting Nepal
Back Track Adventures is proud to have been involved with helping local community groups in Nepal over the years. $100 from every Great Himalayan Trail trek booking will be donated to the Nepal Australia Friendship Association Qld Inc. (NAFA).
