Naduri Health Centre - a chance now for all of us to help!
On returning home to Australia after completing the Kokoda Track so many of our trekkers have asked if there is anything they can do to help the people in PNG.
Since 2002, Back Track has developed good associations with all the villages along the Track and has initiated small projects to help improve lifestyle, health and education needs whenever possible.
An example is our recent sponsorship of a local soccer tournament to be held in remote Kagi Village this Christmas. To add some fun and excitement to the tournament, Back Track has provided the winning trophies for the champion team, runner up and best and fairest player, plus prize money for the winning and runner up teams and gold medals for all the winning team members. The competition will be contested over a weekend by 4 teams from different Kokoda Track Villages. Many of our trekking crew members will be in teams competing in the tournament. These small initiatives create good will, but are short lived.
For a long while we have been looking for a good project to sink our energy into which will have a lasting benefit to a Kokoda Track community. We have now identified a worthy project.
During 2010, in cooperation with the Kokoda Track Foundation and Ausaid we hope to build a new Heath Centre in Naduri Village and over two years train Heath workers to staff the centre. One problem we have always faced is that once we have a project in mind, we face the problem of long term Project management.
The Formation of the Kokoda Track Foundation based from Sydney has provided the perfect vehicle for our involvement. The Foundation is dedicated to the assistance of communities along the Kokoda Track. They have tax deductibility available to all donors plus they have an established infrastructure in place to monitor and manage projects.
Back Track will have details very soon of how you can assist the Naduri Health Centre project with donations and we hope to have other initiatives in place in and around Naduri Village in which past trekkers can become involved.
Naduri is the home of one of the Kokoda Tracks most well known characters. Ovuru Ndiki is now over 100 years old and is one of the few living Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels. Most of Back Track’s trekking crew for 2010 will come from Naduri Village.
