Adverse media Takes a Toll

Unfortunately many media people have taken the negative picture of PNG for their drama filled reports. Last year saw the tragic small plane crash and the unfortunate deaths of some trekkers on the Track. Media went to town with this and Kokoda was milked for all the negative headlines possible. Headlines such as “Death Zone” filled the press and TV. All this achieved was a massive decline in enquiries to trek. The damage was done. We have received so many calls from people who have stated that they had been put off walking the Track because family, friend or employers had told them they did not want them to go because it was so dangerous.

The Kokoda Track is a world class challenging grade bushwalk. It is not a Death Zone. It is suitable for any fit and healthy person who loves the great outdoors. It is as safe as any outdoor activity as long as you do the preparation and are healthy and fit enough for the activity.

Back Track has not had to evacuate anyone from the Track due to fatigue or lack of fitness. We ensure that trekkers are properly instructed in their preparations.

Much has been done to improve safety by the Kokoda Track Authority with assistance and funding from AUSAID. Road access and trail improvements are continuing along the Track to make it even safer for trekkers. Airstrips are being upgraded with new windsocks, field markers and improved drainage.

The introduction of an exclusive radio channel for trek operators will also improve safety in case of an emergency.

Over the Anzac Day week, a team of Doctors surveyed and tested trekkers on the Track. Their conclusion was that dehydration was the major contributing factor trekkers having to be evacuated. Dehydration is easily overcome by having the right hydration program from the start of the trek. Back Track has a sensible approach to carrying water and remaining hydrated. Hydration has never been an issue for our trekkers.

If you have any doubts about your ability to walk the Kokoda Track, give us a call and we will discuss the issues. Please don’t be put off by the media. The Kokoda Track will be recognized in years to come as one of the great walks of the world. Every able-bodied Aussie should walk the Track.
