Back Track Adventures | Adventure all the way

Winter 2008 | 8th Edition

You're invited to meet the Veterans of the Kokoda Track

This coming Thursday 31 July is the 2/14th Australian Infantry Battalion Association 27th Annual Reunion. This is a wonderful day to meet some of the veterans you would have read about who fought along the Kokoda Track. It’s an informal fun day, with the bar opening at 10.30am for drinks at public bar prices. Lunch will follow at 12.00 noon. There will be interesting guest speakers and you should aim to arrive for early drinks or by lunchtime. If you need to get away straight after lunch that is no problem as many will have to go back to work.

Kokoda Track
is now an iconic symbol of what it is to be Australian.

The courage, endurance, sacrifice and mateship displayed by our soldiers who fought and died along the Kokoda Track are characteristics all Australians should aspire to as part of the defining character of an Australian.

Take the challenge and walk in the footsteps of the “ragged bloody heroes’ of the Kokoda Track. Limited availability for 2008, or book now for 2009 (places are already filling fast).

Shaggy Ridge
was a major Japanese stronghold and a commanding geographical feature in the Ramu Valley end of the Finsterre Mountains, south of Madang on PNG’s northern coast.

The Australian army advance on Madang from the south had to pass directly through the river valleys dominated by the heavily entrenched Japanese forces on the nearly impregnable ridge. The fight for Shaggy Ridge is a gripping tale of the heroism and bravery of our Australian soldiers. Because of the remote location of Shaggy Ridge few trekkers or historians have visited the area since the war.

We plan to get up on to Shaggy Ridge and explore seldom seen battle locations and relics and walk tracks through villages that rarely, if ever, receive outside visitors. Our first exploratory Trek departs 27 July 2008. Contact us now to express your interest in joining us in 2009.

Boots in Borneo
commemorates the 2500 mainly Australian soldiers who lost their lives in Sandakan POW Camp and on 3 Death Marches in 1945.

We will attend the 2009 Sandakan Day Memorial Service, walk selected sections of the Death March route and visit historic war sites. We’ve added some other exciting outdoor activities to our itinerary. We will visit The Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation programme, trek to the summit of Mt Kinabalu, learn jungle survival techniques and go white water rafting.

Put your name down now if you are interested in joining us in August 2009.

SPECIAL NOTE: Our Back Track group has been invited to a special "High Tea" on the eve of the Sandakan Memorial Day as guests of the President of Sandakan at his residence.
