Trip Overview

We aim to offer an affordable African Camping Holiday without compromising on comfort, but at the same time providing our fellow travellers the opportunity to experience everything that is the African bush. Part of that experience is in how we travel, where we travel and where we stay.

Where we stay

We have aimed to provide the right accommodation for the right location. There is no need to camp in cities, and we wont, but out in the wild there is no better way to really get the feel of the African bush than camping, and we will.

Variety is the spice of life. Throughout our safari we stay in a wonderful variety of accommodation from hotels, lodges, chalets, bungalows, comfortable portable tents, permanent tented camps and in holiday flats.

Hotels: In Johannesburg and Windhoek we stay in 4 star hotels with all the facilities you would expect at that standard.

Camping: On 8 nights we set up our own mobile camp with comfortable safari chairs, twin share roomy walk-in style tents that are kitted out with thick foam mattresses and covers, warm doonas, plus thick African blankets, pillows, pillow slips and a tent light. For one night in the Okavango Delta we will stay in a permanent tented camp. All camp equipment is supplied, from knives, forks, and spoons to wine glasses. Camp sites have basic, clean ablutions blocks.

Lodges: Using the heading Lodge broadly groups a variety of local accommodation we utilise. We stay in thatched rooms at Kwazi Lodge, National Park Chalets overlooking the floodlit waterholes in Etosha National Park and even flats in a holiday camp in Swakapmund. Our accommodation is always neat, clean, secure and well located.

How we travel

Transport: We travel in a specially constructed safari truck, The Beast (pictured below), designed to carry passengers and crew in comfort. The truck has ample storage space for luggage, safari supplies and equipment. Theres plenty of room on board to spread out, plus eskies to keep drinks and snacks cool. The truck has soft, comfortable seating and is designed for excellent game viewing. It handles the road conditions perfectly and is a safe, reliable, well maintained vehicle. In Savuti and Moremi we use smaller, special purpose safari vehicles specifically designed to handle local conditions.

Meals: Nearly all meals are provided on this holiday. Our safari tucker consists of good wholesome, hearty meals and plenty of it. We have our own mobile bar which we set up each night on safari for dispensing gin and tonics (purely to prevent malaria of course). All drinks are at cost price and a bar tab is recorded and settled at the end of the safari. Soft drinks, wine, beers, spirits and mixers are carried.

Participation: We will have a dedicated supportive crew who will attend to all camp duties including the erection and taking down of tents, preparing all meals and cleaning up. However, on occasions we will be well and truly off the beaten track. On these occasions the crew would welcome any assistance in the setting up and breaking down of our camps or maybe even to help the cook chop a few vegies.

The African Wildlife: Our safari will bring us into close proximity with wild animals. When viewing wild animals we will always be in secure vehicles.  The wildlife and birdlife spotting will be superb. Our camp sites are all safe and secure and it is a never-to-be-forgotten experience and privilege to camp in the wilds of Africa. We will be camping in wildlife areas as highlighted in the itinerary. It is interesting to note that even in Victoria Falls and at Chobe Safari Lodge where we will be staying outside the Wildlife Reserve, you can still encounter elephants, baboons and monkeys along the roads near our accommodation.
