Trip Overview

Back Track's experienced approach to acclimatisation significantly increases your chances of summiting!

Mount Kilimanjaro, at 5890 metres above sea level is the highest mountain on the African continent. This snow covered summit soars high above the plains of East Africa. The extreme altitude of Kilimanjaro prevents most people who attempt the trek from actually reaching the summit. Most tour companies do not allow adequate time for their clients to acclimatise to the lack of oxygen in the atmosphere. Fortunately, this problem is overcome with our trek. Near Kilimanjaro is the extinct volcano of Meru, the fifth highest mountain in Africa. This 4566 metre mountain presents an ideal place to acclimatise for Kili. Prior to ascending Kili, we do a four day trek to the summit of Meru. In addition, we have extended the climb of Kili by one extra acclimatisation day.

This trip is not all mountain walking. Why go to Africa and not see the wildlife? After Meru and Kili we are off to see the best wild game viewing areas in Africa, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. We are going to do a 6 day camping safari which will also include a stop at Olduvai Gorge, the famous archaeological dig that discovered the remains of pre-homosapien man. Let's not forget close contact with Masai warriors, shopping for quality hand made African artifacts and much more.

By selecting Back Track to attempt your Mt Kilimanjaro ascent, you are significantly increasing your chances of a successful outcome. The overall success rate by companies worldwide is particularly low (62% on average), but our sensible approach to acclimatising, which we learnt from 25 years of high altitude Nepal trekking, has seen us achieve an overall (95%) success rate. Even then, our success rate would be 100% had not some group members chosen to not attempt the summit due to circumstances not related to acclimatisation or fitness.
